What a weekend we had at the Porthleven Food Fair 24th/25th April. I set up the Fat Hen stall with Lauren and Jon who came to stay for 10 days to help me forage, cook and sell wild food to the public. It was such a buzz and the home smoked mackerel and dulse seaweed quiches flew off the stall. As did the Japanese knotweed jam and tarts. We also sold sea beet (wild spinach), three cornered garlic, feta and chilli filo pastries alongside our gorgeous sparkling elderflower drink.
Japanese knotweed caused quite a stir as expected as really no-one knows you can eat it. Older people in Cornwall know it as donkey rhubarb or wild rhubarb.
Lets hope there will still be some to harvest after the biological control pathogen is released….
The large patch of untreated knotweed I harvest is still there untreated…. so harvesting is possible though the season is nearly over now.
Off to forage tomorrow for our Flinty Red Wild Dinner in Bristol on Tuesday. Can't wait to take it all up to the city.
